Heavy smoke – what it is, how to get it
Heavy smoke is a physical result of using dry ice. Considering that the temperature obtained in the process of sublimation of this chemical compound is -78.5° C, upon contact with the ambient environment, a smoke with a much higher density than the oxygen in the room will result. This will make it possible to create a blanket of smoke that will not rise higher than 30-35 centimeters from the floor. For such an effect, which can last about a quarter of an hour, you only need a dry ice box and a so-called heavy smoke machine.
The working principles of the heavy smoke machine are quite complicated, but in the end what matters is the visible result. As you might expect, the use of this heavy smoke is very common for special events. Weddings, baptisms or birthdays are the moments when such an effect can make the difference between an ordinary event and a fairy tale.
The 5 – 15 minutes (depending on the machine) of smoke that would result from using a dry ice box is more than enough for the bridal dance for example or the arrival of the cake. The effect lasts, of course, depending on the amount of dry ice used.
In addition, dry ice can also be used for wine decanters or champagne glasses. In contact with the liquid in the glass, the result will be the same heavy smoke, which will gradually evaporate from the diners’ glasses.
